VIRGINIA DISTRACTED DRIVING COALITION

The Virginia Distracted Driving Coalition (VDDC)’s mission is to organize and raise our voices to support efforts that demand a change to what has become a leading cause of death across the country; Distracted Driving.

We are seeking changes in legislation that will hold offenders accountable while we work to support advocates and the Virginia victims who have been forever negatively affected by Distracted Driving.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving can be defined as any activity that diverts your attention from operating a vehicle safely. These activities may include texting, eating or drinking, adjusting the stereo or navigation system, talking to passengers, or anything else that takes your focus away from driving. The most dangerous distraction is texting, as it takes your eyes off the road for approximately five seconds. When traveling at 55 mph, that’s equivalent to driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. It’s important to remember that safe driving requires your full attention. Engaging in any non-driving activities while driving can be a potential distraction and increase the risk of a crash.

Types of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has three types: manual, visual, and cognitive. Manual distraction occurs when a driver’s hands are not on the wheel, while visual distraction occurs when a driver’s eyes are not on the road. Cognitive distraction, the most severe form, happens when a driver’s mind is not focused on driving, making them unaware of their surroundings. Cognitive distraction, such as being on the phone while driving, can result in severe impairment and potentially dangerous situations.
